He United States Department of Justice filed a lawsuit yesterday seeking more than 100 million dollars to the Singaporean owner and operator of the cargo ship that destroyed a sea bridge in Baltimore.
The ship named “Dali”, with a Singapore flag and 300 meters in length, crashed into the bridge Francis Scott Key on March 26. It caused the bridge to collapse and resulted in the death of six workers who were working on it.
The civil suit against Grace Ocean Private y Synergy Marine Private was filed in the district court of USAfrom the district of Maryland.
“The Department of Justice is committed to ensuring accountability for those responsible for the destruction of the bridge. Francis Scott Key“said the attorney general, Merrick Garland, in a statement.
The demand is destined to recover more than $100 million in costs incurred in responding to the disaster, as well as removing tons of debris that resulted from the collision, he added.
The container ship lost power as it left the port of Baltimore towards Sri Lanka and crashed into a support column of the bridge Francis Scott Key.
The claim occurs after Grace Ocean y Synergy Marine took legal action of their own earlier this year seeking to limit their liability to $44 million.
With the measure, the Department of Justice does not claim damages for any costs incurred in rebuilding the bridge.
The state of Maryland file a separate lawsuit.
The channel of Fort McHenry leading to the Port of Baltimore, a key hub for the auto industry, reopened to commercial shipping on June 10.
This incident interrupted the maritime flow for several days, while they managed to lift the debris so that other ships could pass.
