Norland: Unilateral moves on central bank, oil unacceptable, dialogue necessary

US Special Envoy to Libya Ambassador Richard Norland expressed his concern about the recent “unilateral moves” in Libya, particularly the Presidential Council’s decision to dismiss the governor of the Central Bank in Tripoli, and the subsequent response by the “Eastern Libya camp” to close some oil fields and ports.

In an interview with Youm7, Norland stressed the need for the Libyan parties to focus on resolving the Central Bank crisis so that it does not turn into a “vicious circle” that affects the economic and political situation in the country, saying that everyone realizes the urgent need to reach a decision regarding the leadership of the Central Bank.

Regarding the political situation, the US envoy stressed the need for all Libyan political stakeholders to participate in a new and broad dialogue aimed at reaching compromise solutions that serve Libya’s interests.

Regarding the elections for the presidency of the Supreme Council of State, Norland explained that they had not taken a position on who won the position, calling for the need to resolve the dispute as quickly as possible so that the Supreme Council of State could carry out its required role.

Regarding the role of the United States in Libya, Norland stressed that his country is working on a “new strategy” to prevent violence and enhance stability in the country, noting that “the spread of physical liquidation and enforced disappearances due to differences in viewpoints” in Libya raises concerns about the growing culture of impunity.
