The European Union called “a historic decision” the approval by the UN General Assembly of the resolution “Aggression against Ukraine”, condemning the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. This is stated in the statement of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell, published on Wednesday, March 2, on the website of the EU Foreign Service.

As noted in the document, the UN member states strongly condemned the aggression by the Russian Federation, as well as the involvement of Belarus in it, demanded to stop the use of force against Ukraine and withdraw all armed forces from all its territory – immediately, completely and unconditionally. The text of the resolution was prepared by the EU leadership together with the EU member states, Ukraine and partners, the statement said.

Borrell urged to support Ukraine and its democratic institutions

Josep Borrell thanked all the countries with which the European Union “defends the international system based on rules” for supporting the resolution. The head of EU diplomacy urged “to continue working for the benefit of peace and security, to protect all states, large and small, and to support Ukraine and its democratic institutions and representatives.”

The UN General Assembly at a special session on Wednesday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution in support of Ukraine. 141 out of 193 UN member states voted for the document. Five countries opposed: Russia, Belarus, Eritrea, North Korea and Syria. Another 35 states, including China, abstained.
