An explosion caused by a gas leak in a coal mine in eastern Iran has killed at least 51 people and injured around twenty, and the search for others continues, according to official media.

The official IRNA news agency reported that “the number of workers killed rose to 51 and the number of wounded rose to 20” as a result of the explosion at the Tabas mine, which officials reported was caused by a leak gas.
An earlier toll from the same source reported that at least 30 people had been killed.
According to IRNA, the explosion occurred around nine o’clock on Saturday night in the private mine of Ma’adin Jaw, noting that the number of workers present was at least 70 people.
She added that the explosion in two blocks of the mine was caused by a methane gas leak.
State television broadcast scenes of ambulances and helicopters going to the scene of the accident to transport the injured to hospital.
Also, video footage published by IRNA showed the bodies of the victims wearing work uniforms, being carried away from the site on mine vehicles.
