Tunisia calls for cooperation between countries to face challenges

The Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the international governance tools that were put in place after World War II are now completely incapable of confronting the challenges ahead, calling for the adoption of a new approach to international cooperation based on mutual respect.

Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti said in a speech during his participation in the “Future Summit” held in New York on September 22 and 23, “Tunisia supported the initiative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to call for holding this summit, believing in the inevitability of conducting the necessary reviews of the approaches followed and the need to reform the mechanisms of multilateral action.”

He added, “Tunisia believes in the importance of confronting challenges, and Mohamed Ali Nafti called for “adopting a new approach to international cooperation based on equality, mutual respect, non-interference in the affairs of others, respect for national sovereignty, and human solidarity based on the conviction of a common destiny and the interconnected interests of peoples.”

Al-Nafti stressed Tunisia’s welcome to the summit’s adoption of the “Charter for the Future, the Global Digital Charter, and the Declaration Document on Future Generations,” explaining that “the true success of the summit remains linked to everyone’s serious engagement in implementing its outcomes so that they do not remain mere declarations of good intentions.”

He stressed that “it is necessary to actually begin addressing the strategic gaps in global governance mechanisms, whether it is related to reforming the United Nations to make its structures more efficient, especially the Security Council, whose composition no longer reflects international balances, or to restructuring the international financial system so that it becomes more transparent, fair and responsive to the priorities and concerns of developing countries.”

On this occasion, the Minister renewed his call on developed countries to “fulfill their commitments in the field of climate finance and to cooperate seriously to overcome obstacles in order to facilitate the recovery of looted funds abroad for the benefit of the peoples of affected countries, thus enhancing their ability to rely on their own resources in facing the challenges ahead.”

Al-Nafti explained that “the slogan ‘Leave no one behind’ cannot have any credibility if we exclude the Palestinian people who are experiencing the most heinous violations and the most horrific crimes against humanity at the hands of the brutal occupation, in light of suspicious international silence and the complete inability of the international and UN system.”

He pointed out that the moral and historical responsibility requires the international community not to let the Palestinian people fall behind in the pursuit of freedom, dignity, and the right to life, survival, and decent living in security and stability. This requires putting an immediate end to the aggression on Gaza and the rest of the Palestinian territories and supporting the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people to recover all their occupied territories and establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
