‘Mickey and Friends’ walk through a six-panel folding screen and experience Korean culture.

The National Heritage Administration announced on the 23rd that it will co-host the exhibition ‘Mickey in Deoksugung: Art, Beyond Boundaries’ with Disney Company Korea from the 28th to October 20th at Deoksugung Palace in Jung-gu, Seoul.

This exhibition is part of a business agreement signed between the National Heritage Administration and Disney Korea in June of this year to enhance the traditional value of national heritage and promote it widely at home and abroad.

The National Heritage Administration said, “Disney characters called ‘Mickey and Friends’ will visit Dondeokjeon in Deoksugung Palace and naturally blend in with the royal heritage, showcasing works that have been reinterpreted through the eyes of young Korean artists.”

A balloon sculpture by contemporary artist Kang Jae-won depicting Disney characters walking on a bird at Deoksugung Palace’s Yeonji Pond welcomes visitors.

At the special exhibition hall on the first floor of Dondeokjeon, contemporary artists such as Kim Se-dong, Woo Na-young (pen name Obsidian), Seong Rip, Buwon, Jang Seung-jin, and Park Seo-woo, as well as national intangible cultural heritage Dancheong master Lee Su-ja and An Yu-jin, will present collaborative works themed on Disney characters.

Artist Una Young, a national heritage ambassador, presents a work inspired by the ‘Ten Longevity Symbols’. She captured the scenes of ‘Mickey and Friends’ traveling around Korea and walking around national heritage sites such as Deoksugung Palace on a six-panel folding screen.

Lee Moon-hyun, a ceramic artist and graduate of the Department of Traditional Arts and Crafts at Korea National University of Cultural Heritage, exhibited his ceramic works.

Artist Kim Se-dong created a digitally printed work of art depicting Disney characters having fun in front of our palace.

Artist Seongrip presents a work that expresses Disney characters with lines and space, while artist Buwon presents a work that reinterprets a Disney character standing on a lotus flower using ceramics.

Artist Park Seo-woo will present a detailed painting featuring Disney characters with the Dondeokjeon Hall and the Pagoda Tree at Deoksugung Palace in the background, while artist Jang Seung-jin and Dancheong master Lee Su-ja and Ahn Yu-jin will present an object piece they collaborated on using Mickey’s hand as the subject.

There will also be side events. Photo areas will be set up throughout Deoksugung Palace where you can take pictures with Disney character sculptures.

You can also take a four-cut photo of your life with traditional patterns and Disney characters.

The exhibition is open from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM every day except for Deoksugung Palace’s closing days. Artist Kang Jae-won’s works on display at Yeonji can be viewed from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

The exhibition runs until October 20th.
