(ANSA) – PORTICI (NAPLES), 23 SEPTEMBER – ‘An innovative path for the future of global health’: this is the title of a conference held at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno in Portici (Naples) in which the results of the study for the creation of the Regional Center for Environment, Climate, Health for the management of health risks associated with environmental and climatic factors that operates within the Regional Health Prevention System were presented. The Center, divided into two thematic areas, health prevention and agro-environment and climate, has as its objective the evaluation of the causal link between environmental exposures and the effects on human health through monitoring, research and prevention paths.
The Regional Center – it was highlighted – will have a strategic role in the study of the effects of pollution and pathogens on public health, with the aim of promoting innovative policies that improve the quality of life of citizens and reduce health risks related to environmental factors.
“The intuition of this Center was born from the great effort made in the last ten years. We have investigated and monitored the environment like never before” said Antonio Limone, general director of the Izsm “We have collected data and put together a model for precision medicine, which will allow us to perform targeted screening to save people’s lives. For example, if we know that in a territory we have found the presence of tetrachloroethylene, we will investigate possible bladder tumors. Therefore, our strategy shifts to the environmental criticality and its impact on health, in a One Health perspective: it is our future and the new frontier of healthcare”.
At the event, the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, who underlined the importance of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno and its activities for the territory: “We must express appreciation for the excellent work carried out over the years together with the Zooprofilattico Institute of Portici. There was significant help during the Covid emergency to quickly process the swabs, and today a real battle against brucellosis is underway, especially in Caserta, with important results and the resolution of over half of the outbreaks. But significant help came in particular in identifying the causal link between the environment and health, on the correlation between the explosion of tumor diseases and environmental pollution.
With extensive investigations, carried out especially in the Land of Fires and which involved agricultural land, aquifers and emissions into the atmosphere. We are moving forward towards targeted and quality prevention of certain diseases in relation to pollutants. And in this, the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Southern Italy is an excellence in Italy and Campania.” The event was attended, among others, by Giovanni Leonardi, Head of the Department of Human Health, Animal Health and the One Health Ecosystem and International Relations – Ministry of Health, and Annibale Biggeri, epidemiologist and full professor of medical statistics Department of Cardio-Thoracic-Vascular Sciences and Public Health – University of Padua.
