“Moon Jae-in, concerns about ‘blatant and illegal political prosecution behavior’”
The Democratic Party of Korea’s “Committee to Counter Political Suppression of the Former Regime” (Committee) visited former President Moon Jae-in on the 23rd and expressed its intention to respond firmly to political prosecution suppression. The Committee, which was launched on the 9th of this month, is a dedicated organization within the party to respond to the prosecution’s investigation targeting former President Moon, following Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung.
Around 10 Democratic Party members, including Countermeasures Committee Chairman Kim Young-jin and Secretary General Kim Young-bae, visited former President Moon’s private residence in Pyeongsan Village, Yangsan, Gyeongnam Province, and met with him for about an hour. After the meeting, Chairman Kim met with reporters and said, “The Countermeasures Committee will respond resolutely to the prosecution’s brutal suppression of the former government and its behavior bordering on tyranny.”
He said, “Former President Moon was very worried about what the people would think about this kind of behavior of the political prosecution,” and “(Former President Moon) said, ‘If the prosecution, which is supposed to work for the people, is doing this to even the former president, how hard must it be for our people? This is why we need to reform the prosecution. ‘”
Secretary Kim also said, “Former President Moon said that the prosecution is an institution that should take care of the people’s livelihood and suffering, but the unethical and illegal behavior of political prosecution is so blatant that he expressed concern about how much excessive prosecutorial power they will exercise on our people. He expressed great concern in particular about the prosecution’s behavior of adding a separate case to a separate case.”
Secretary Kim emphasized, “We will respond strongly to the unconstitutional and illegal behaviors repeatedly committed by political prosecutors, such as the principle of prohibiting investigation of separate cases.” The countermeasure committee decided to devise measures to firmly hold political prosecutors accountable for their illegal behavior, starting with a protest visit to the prosecution on the 27th of this month, and through measures such as the state audit and regular National Assembly system improvement plan.
