jpnn.comJAKARTA – National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo appreciates the release of Susi Air pilot, Captain Philip Mark Mehrtens, which was carried out by joint Polri-TNI personnel.

Captain Philip was held hostage by an armed criminal group (KKB) on February 7, 2023 or for 1.5 years, before finally being rescued on September 21, 2024.

“Alhamdulillah, on the orders of the President (Jokowi) to carry out the release of the kidnapping victim of the New Zealand pilot some time ago. Thanks to the hard work of the entire team tasked with carrying out the operation, today the team completed the mission and brought home the hostage pilot in good health,” said the Chief of Police in his press release, Saturday (21/9).

The Chief of Police also congratulated all personnel involved in Operation Paro and Damai Cartenz.

“Congratulations to all members of the TNI-Polri who are members of Ops Paro and Damai Cartenz who have succeeded in rescuing the New Zealand Pilot named Philip Mark Mehrtens who was kidnapped by the KKB for approximately 1.5 years,” said Sigit.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief of Papua Police and Head of the Cartenz 2024 Peace Operations, Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani, explained that his party always prioritizes a soft approach in efforts to free Captain Philip.

“We prioritize an approach through religious figures, church figures, traditional figures, and Egianus Kogoya’s close family. This approach is important to minimize the loss of life, both from the authorities, civilians, and at the same time maintain the safety of the pilot himself,” he said.

Before being sent back to his home country, Captain Philip was first taken to a special room to undergo medical mitigation, while also ensuring that his psychological condition was stable. (man/jpnn)
