Vicente Taiano, a member of the Social Christian Party (PSC), expressed his concern on Friday about the recent events at the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (Cpccs), describing them as “shameful spectacles.”

According to the legislator, these events underline the need for a constitutional reform to eliminate the council, which he believes does not fulfil its purpose and only fuels conflicts of interest.

In a recent interview on Radio Sucesos, he explained that the National Assembly must appoint the new president of the Judicial Council unless there is some judicial intervention that prevents the appointment.

Taiano suggested that there could be impeachment proceedings against the Cpccs members due to possible violations of rules in their appointment. He said that any breach of duties and procedures should be carefully reviewed to set precedents and ensure the accountability of officials.

In this regard, he stressed that the National Assembly should focus on the problems that really concern citizens, such as the increasing rate of extortion and murder. He also expressed his frustration at the lack of solutions from the Government to the possible energy crisis that is looming in September, when a dry season is expected.

Role of the PSC and the National Assembly

The interview also touched on the relationship between the National Assembly and the Executive. Taiano defended the position of the PSC and the president of the Assembly, Henry Kronfle, pointing out that they cannot allow the continued lying about the work of Parliament.

He also stressed that the Assembly has approved 25 laws and several international treaties, and stressed the need to focus on concrete solutions to improve the quality of life of Ecuadorians.

In response to President Guillermo Lasso’s criticism of the creation of an occasional commission to investigate him, Taiano said that the Assembly’s decisions must be responsible and not merely political. He stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in the use of public resources, criticizing the Executive’s vetoes of laws that would negatively affect citizens.
