The candidate of the Republican Party for the presidency of the United States, Donald Trump, said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants the Democrats to win the election, in which Trump will face the Vice President from the Democratic Party, Kamala Harris, BTA reported, referring to Reuters.
“I think Zelensky is the greatest businessman in history. Every time he comes into the country, he leaves with $60 billion,” Trump said at a rally in Pennsylvania. “He desperately wants them to win these elections, because I would have acted differently, I would have negotiated peace,” added the ex-president.
Trump has said that if he wins the election, he will call Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky and urge them to reach an agreement to end the war.
The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to Trump’s remarks, and he did not provide details on his peace plan. According to the polls, a close race between the former president and Harris is emerging.
Zelensky arrived in the US on Sunday to take part in the UN General Assembly sessions and called on his partners to help achieve a “common victory for a truly just peace”.
Washington and its allies have provided billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, while imposing several packages of sanctions on Moscow.
Trump regularly calls US aid to Ukraine a waste of money and refuses to say he wants Ukraine to win.
He and Zelensky spoke by phone in July but have not met in person since the end of Trump’s 2017-2021 term.
