While the formation of a bipartisan consultative body to discuss solutions to the medical crisis is making little progress, the Democratic Party of Korea on the 23rd raised the issue of “government and ruling party responsibility,” saying, “The key to resolving the medical crisis lies with the government and ruling party.”

The Democratic Party pressured, “At the dinner between President Yoon Seok-yeol and People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon on the 24th, we must find at least a small clue to solving the medical crisis.” In response, the People Power Party countered, “The Democratic Party has shown a lukewarm attitude by emphasizing the participation of key medical groups. The Democratic Party should cooperate more actively in forming a consultative body.”

A key Democratic Party official said in a phone call that day, “The Democratic Party and the Korean Medical Association (KMA) share the same opinion that the government’s attitude must change in order to form a table.” There are also opinions within the Democratic Party that in order to induce a change in the government’s attitude, a motion to dismiss Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Kyu-hong and other responsible officials should be submitted. A Democratic Party floor leader official said, “Until early October, we should focus on re-approving the Kim Gun-hee Special Prosecutor Act,” but added, “If the government does not make any progress by the end of the state audit, we could submit a motion to dismiss.”

The People Power Party refuted the proposal for a “government-excluding-ruling-opposition-consultative body” discussed at the Democratic Party and the Korean Medical Association meeting the previous day (the 22nd), saying, “What difference does it make if we exclude the government? We should not use it to pressure the government.” A key member of the People Power Party expressed concern, saying, “It is an important situation where doctors and politicians with different views are having a conversation,” and “If the government leaves, the current situation cannot change.”

However, some in the ruling party say, “Once the ruling and opposition parties launch a consultative body, the government will have no choice but to join.
