(ANSA) – BOLOGNA, SEPTEMBER 24 – It took just eight minutes of surgery and four and a half hours in hospital to definitively and completely “burn” a thyroid tumor in a 69-year-old patient. The operation, illustrated in a press conference, was performed in recent weeks at the ‘Ramazzini’ hospital in Carpi by the team of the Endocrinology complex of the Modena Local Health Authority, through a laser thermoablation procedure, under ultrasound guidance. The woman was suffering from papillary microcarcinoma of the thyroid, a six-millimeter neoplasm of the right thyroid lobe and is now well. She was subjected to local anesthesia and remained awake and cooperative throughout; at the end of the operation there were no complications and no scars remained. “The procedure is absolutely innovative and at the same time, in expert hands, simple to perform – comments Professor Giampaolo Papi who directed the team – and is highly effective in the treatment of symptomatic benign thyroid nodules and small malignant ones, so-called intraparechimal. Patients generally declare themselves very satisfied, because, contrary to what happens with traditional surgery, they do not have to stay in hospital for days, they do not undergo general anesthesia, they do not have a permanent scar on their neck and, above all, they fully maintain the functionality of their thyroid”.
The Endocrinology complex of the Modena Local Health Authority has begun thermal ablation procedures for thyroid nodules since 2019: a five-year experience that has made it one of the centers in Italy with the highest volume, having treated 272 patients so far. “The path traced for some time in the endocrinological field is continuing to bring excellent results for the citizens of Modena affected by thyroid diseases – underlines the general director of the Modena Local Health Authority Anna Maria Petrini – This intervention demonstrates how the skills put into play by our professionals combined with the availability of the most advanced instruments, can benefit the health of patients, reducing the complications and consequences of an operation to a minimum”.
