Congress was supposed to approve the 2025 budget by the end of September – the end date of the fiscal year – to fund all the services.
But without Congress reaching an agreement on next year’s budget, a temporary funding measure was expected.
Republicans have been demanding for weeks that any budget be linked to new conditions under which voters must prove their American citizenship, a text that was put under pressure by Republican candidate Donald Trump, who continues to assert, without providing any evidence, that there was he is a victim of electoral fraud in 2020.
On Wednesday, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives failed to pass a bill combining a temporary funding measure with a six-month budget extension.
The agreement announced on Sunday excludes the temporary funding measure and only extends funding until December 20.
During the presidential elections that will be held on November 5, the identity of the party that will control both chambers of Congress will also be determined.
With the agreement reached on Sunday, the crisis is postponed to the period between the day of the elections and the day of the scheduled inauguration on 20 January.
