Timberlake’s concert at Darjus and Girena Stadium in Kaunas is planned for June 6.
This summer Kaunas Stadium hosted several well-attended concerts, such as performances by British musician Ed Sheeran and Lithuanian pop star Jessica Šivokaite, who uses the pseudonym “Jessica Shy”. After these measures, the Lithuanian Football Federation had to move the national team’s matches to Marijampoli due to the damaged surface of the field.
It is now clear that the national team will not be able to play games in Kaunas next summer either.
The calendar of the International Association of Football Federations (FIFA) shows that the international matches for the Lithuanian men’s football team are scheduled for 6-7. and June 9-10, which is the same time as Timberlake’s concert.
“We will celebrate again, we will dance. We already knew last week that the manager of the stadium was planning this concert. They knew that the FIFA window was scheduled at the same time, but that’s the way it is. I won’t say anything new. Football is on the back burner again,” the portal “15min .lt” said the president of the Lithuanian Football Federation, Edgars Stankevičs.
In June next year, the Lithuanian national football team will play the 2026 World Cup qualification matches. Lithuanian footballers will find out their opponents after the draw on December 13.
“Before the tournament, each federation will receive a special FIFA form, in which we will mark when we can play home games. Now it will be very simple – we will mark that we will not be able to play at home in June, because there will be no suitable field,” said Stankevich.
As the head of the Lithuanian Football Federation said, the management of the Darjus and Girėnas Stadium did not consult with the federation when deciding on the concert.
The stadium in Kaunas with more than 15,000 seats is the largest in Lithuania. It is the home field of the Lithuanian national football team and the Kaunas “Žalgiris” football club.
In the latest FIFA ranking, the Lithuanian national team has lost four places and occupies the 139th position.
After the concert in Kaunas on June 9, Timberlake will perform on the stage of Tallinn’s Dziesmusvetki. Returning to the scene after a five-year hiatus, Timberlake is on tour following the release of his sixth studio album, Everything I Thought It Was, this year.
