Bicycle activists have published information on social networks that an “urban partisan” bike lane has been installed on Biķernieku Street.
As the LETA agency was informed by the Riga City Council, the application of arbitrary and uncoordinated horizontal markings on the road can endanger the health and life of road users.
Oto Ozols, Deputy Head of the Bicycle Infrastructure Department of the Riga Municipality’s Outdoor Space and Mobility Department, informs that, continuing the improvement of bicycle infrastructure in Riga, it is planned to install bicycle lanes in the section of Biķernieku Street from Lielvārdes Street to Ulbrokas Street.
In his opinion, the most important thing in the construction of any new traffic infrastructure object is the safety of all road users, therefore a thorough study and solutions according to road traffic regulations are necessary.
In the Riga Municipality, work is underway on the preparation of the Biķernieku Street bicycle lane design. This process takes time, because it is not enough just to draw the lines separating the lanes, but also to find the best solutions for crossing intersections safely, Ozols emphasizes.
It has already been reported that this year in the capital, bicycle infrastructure has been installed in the vicinity of Āgenskalns and Ķīpsala – in the section of Ballast Dam from Krišjāņas Valdemāras Street to Daugavgrīvas Street, in the vicinity of Mežciem – along the entire length of Gaiļezera Street, as well as the connection of Čiekurkalns and Mežaparks has been created by introducing bicycle infrastructure in Viskaļi and Ezermalas on the street.
Work is underway on the implementation of other bicycle infrastructure projects.
