TRENTO. The Carabinieri of the NAS of Trento, at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, have carried out the preventive seizure of a building used as a ‘birth point’. In the structure, in a small village in Valsugana 10 kilometres from Trento, some operations were carried out parts, in the absence of any health authorization.
The decree was notified to two midwives considered to be active members of the association that managed the facility.
The midwives, in collaboration with others – still unknown – managed the home dedicated to obstetric care and out-of-hospital births in the absence of health authorizations and without verifying the structural and health and hygiene requirements.
The investigation, coordinated by the Trento Public Prosecutor’s Office, arose from a Reporting by the health managers of the Provincial Health Services Company of the province of Trento following the emergency transport of a woman giving birth to the Santa Chiara hospital in Trento due to a haemorrhage.
On that occasion, the health personnel, having inquired about the woman’s place of origin, noted that there were numerous home births in the small village, of about one hundred inhabitants. From a subsequent cross-checking of databases the Health Authority then revealed a discrepancy between the area of the declared home birth and the residence of several women giving birth.
The investigations revealed that the facility had been open for more than three years. Several women were followed during their pregnancy and birth, which was then reported to the Trento Health Authority as a home birth.
The exact number of people who have used the birth point is being ascertained.
The birthing center also had an updated web portal, offering alternative medicine treatments and advertising itself as an “obstetric clinic” on online geographic mapping platforms.
