Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša (JV) and Minister of Finance Arvils Asheradens (JV) also participated in the extraordinary meeting of the LSA, who, according to the information provided by the LSA, offered the mentioned compromise.

It is planned that from January 2025, the amount of the scholarship will be increased to 180 euros. The maximum monthly income threshold of the families of scholarship applicants will be raised from 1,000 euros to 1,480 euros per month, while from the fall of 2025, low-income and needy students could gradually receive the scholarship.

Students of the mentioned groups will be able to receive the scholarship gradually, starting with the first course of study in 2025/2026. in the study year, each year the range of recipients expands with the next study year.

The council of LSA, after the report of the board and mutual discussions, decided to agree to the proposed compromise. In the event that the compromise proposed by the Ministry of the Interior and the FM is not fulfilled, the LSA board will organize protest actions.

The president of LSA, Alens Aleksandrs Černias, says that with this decision, he “managed to protect” approximately one million euros for the scholarship fund “Studētgods” from the originally planned reduction of 2.6 million euros.

As reported, due to austerity measures, the Ministry of Education and Science planned to reduce the budgeted funds for the “Studētgods” scholarship by 2.6 million euros. Such a reduction was planned, because in previous years significantly more funding than what is actually needed was regularly requested for the scholarship, and the reduction would not have meant a reduction in the size of the scholarship or the number of recipients. Nevertheless, the planned reduction caused dissatisfaction among students.

Persons with disabilities, orphans or young people left without parental support and persons from large families can apply for the “Studētgods” scholarship.

Currently, the regulations provide that a student can apply for a scholarship, whose total income in the previous tax year does not exceed 12,000 euros gross according to the information available to the State Revenue Service, when evaluating the adequacy of the applications received at the beginning of the year, but when evaluating the applications received at the beginning of the academic year, the total income of the student revenues in the relevant year do not exceed 8,000 euros gross.
