“Jinbong is a person who has to survive at work, at home, and at Amazon.”

At the production report meeting for the movie ‘Amazon Hwalmyeongsu’ held at Lotte Cinema Konkuk University Entrance on the 24th, actor Ryu Seung-ryong said, “The main point is to make efforts to create empathy and cheer, while also hitting the humor points with the happenings that arise as the characters collide among them.”

He continued, “If ‘Extreme Job’ is a story that could happen, ‘Amazon Archery’ is a story about an emergency landing in the Amazon, meeting archery masters, and after many twists and turns, coming to Korea through training and having an archery match.” Regarding the part that he considered important while acting, he said, “There is plausibility in the story, and I acted truthfully so that people could relate to it and not say, ‘This doesn’t make sense. ‘”

‘Amazon’s Hwalmyeongsu’ is a comedy film that tells the story of Jinbong (Ryu Seung-ryong), a former national archery team member who is subject to restructuring at home and at work, meeting Bbangsik (Jin Seon-gyu), a Korean-Boledorian interpreter, and three Amazon warriors with divine archery skills. Each of them decides to participate in the World Archery Championships and heads to Seoul to achieve their goals.

Actors Yeom Hye-ran and Go Kyung-pyo, as well as Igor Pedroso, Luan Brum, and JB Oliveira, who are making their Korean screen debuts, will be joining the cast. The screenplay was written by Bae Se-young, who wrote Extreme Jobs (2019) and Intimate Strangers (2018), and the film is directed by Kim Chang-joo, who created Restricted Calls (2021).

In this film, Ryu Seung-ryong and Jin Seon-kyu, the two actors of ‘Extreme Job’ (16.26 million viewers), which ranked second in the all-time Korean box office, meet again after five years. Ryu Seung-ryong has been responsible for the history of Korean comedy box office hits with films such as ‘Extreme Job’ (2019) and ‘Miracle in Cell No. 7’ (2013). Regarding his feelings about meeting Jin Seon-kyu again, Ryu Seung-ryong said, “I’ve known Jin Seon-kyu for six years, but while filming this time, I thought, ‘Who else could do it if not Jin Seon-kyu? ‘” and praised him, saying, “He spoke Guarani so naturally. The play ran toward fun just like Bbangsik appeared and climbed the jump ramp. You could tell just by looking at each other’s eyes.” Jin Seon-kyu said, “In ‘Extreme Job’, Ryu Seung-ryong supported the four detectives like a pillar. Ryu Seung-ryong is a genius of comedy. I thought that if I just looked at his eyes and embraced his acting, this work would be successful.”

Jin-bong, played by Ryu Seung-ryong, was once a promising archery medalist. After retiring, he joined his company, but his promotion has been slipping every year. Ryu Seung-ryong experienced archery in the movie Bow and Arrow (2011). He said, “I learned archery back then, and now I do archery,” and “Archery should be done differently, but because of what I practiced before, I kept doing it the way of archery.” He also said, “Since I had to act as a coach for archery players, I got advice from former national archery coaches. I practiced a lot.”

Bbangsik is a Korean-Boledorian who acts as an interpreter between Jinbong and the Amazon warriors, and is also a YouTuber. Jin Seon-gyu said, “I’m extreme I. Bbangsik is extreme E and an insider, so he’s the complete opposite,” and revealed that he practiced a lot and watched a lot of YouTube for this. He said, “The most important thing was language. I practiced Korean, which third-generation Koreans living abroad would likely use, Guarani, the indigenous language of Boledor, and Portuguese. That was the hardest.” He added, “Guarani in particular had a hard time memorizing because every syllable was different. I would memorize it and then forget it again and again.”

Jin Seon-gyu got a perm and wore a Hawaiian shirt to portray the character of Bbang-sik. He revealed, “I wanted the image of Jin Seon-gyu to disappear, so I tied my hair with a toothpick-sized pin.” He continued, “I felt so free because it wasn’t me. But when I took off my makeup and went home, I felt all drained. I was using all my energy to play the role. I thought I was really happy when I was acting.”

The scenes of the indigenous people in the movie were actually filmed on location in Brazil. Ryu Seung-ryong said, “The local indigenous people of the Amazon made extra appearances. Their faces showed the twists and turns of their lives. It took about 40 hours to get there, but I’m glad I went.” Jin Seon-gyu also said, “Just seeing the residents’ pure appearances when I went there was so great.” However, he expressed regret, saying, “It was the worst dry season in 130 years. I felt the seriousness of the environmental problem when I saw the Amazon water drying up.”

‘Amazon Hwalmyeongsu’ is the first comedy film to incorporate archery. It is also a point of interest to see how archery, a popular sport in Korea, will play a key role in solving the story on the screen. Director Kim Chang-joo said this about why he chose archery. “Archery creates a tremendous suspense when a difference of 1 or 2 points is given. A difference of a few millimeters can determine the winner. In the film, the suspense is maintained and then abruptly broken to create comedy. I really liked the subject of archery, so I thought it would be fun to mix it with humor.”

‘Amazon Life Water’ will be released on the 30th of next month.
