In a public statement, the FACh explained that “the institutional detection system of the IV Air Brigade revealed the presence of unidentified traffic in national airspace.”

The Chilean Air Force (FACh) finally delivered the results of its investigationafter last August 27th an unidentified air incursion was detected in the Strait of Magellan.

In a public statementthe FACh explained that “The institutional detection system of the IV Air Brigade revealed the presence of unidentified traffic in national airspace.”

Given this scenario and “after applying the established protocols to determine its origin and nature”, ordering “the takeoff of an F-5E aircraft to carry out its identification. The response of the F-5E aircraft was carried out within the times and standards established for this purpose.”

“However, despite the fact that the detection was carried out simultaneously by ground and air sensors, this (object) could not be identified, as it disappeared from the radar display,” the institution said.

The FACh stated that “later, and after the identification efforts had been exhausted, the takeoff of a DHC-6 aircraft and a UH-412 helicopter was arranged, with the purpose of carrying out a reconnaissance of the sector where the contact had disappeared.”

In this regard, he explained that the deployment “occurred in nighttime conditions and the existing weather conditions did not limit air operations, nor did they favor the occurrence of special meteorological phenomena that could generate false radar contacts.”

In view of this, the FACh stated that “there is a possibility that what was detected was an aircraft flying at low altitude and speed,” and that the “trajectory partly passed outside radar coverage, ignoring the existence of institutional detection systems, finally landing in an undetermined sector, which would explain the disappearance of ground and air radar contact.”

It was therefore determined that “there was a confirmed detection of unknown trafficking and that everything was generated and developed within the national territory, Therefore it cannot be stated that a violation of Chilean airspace has occurred.”
