Of Aldo Grasso

Since the first episode, the Rai1 series has strung together tension and twists, at the bottom of which stands the oldest of the questions: what are the boundaries between good and evil?

“If it’s true that your son is your whole life, what are you willing to do to save his?” From the reflection-monologue by Vittorio Pagani (Stefano Accorsi) who opens the new Rai1 series
Your honour
, this “unavoidable question” emerges, heart and engine of the whole story. Pagani is an esteemed judge of the Milan court, running for the presidency of the same; in the past, as a prosecutor, his latest success was to defeat the violent Latin gang of the Silva, at the cost of fears and threats to his family. A widower after his wife’s suicide, his upright life imbued with the ideals of justice suddenly changes when his eighteen-year-old son Matteo – driving his mother’s car despite not having a license – runs over and kills a motorcyclist. Vittorio convinces him to turn himself in to the police, but when he arrives at the police station he discovers that the victim is Diego Silva, the youngest of the crime family.

Understanding the danger, Vittorio completely changes perspective, misleads the investigations, takes charge of the trials, puts an innocent person in trouble, willing to do anything to preserve his son from certain revenge. The series, directed by Alessandro Casale, is the remake of the American
Your Honor
(from an idea by Stefano Accorsi?) in turn inspired by the Israeli
Quota
which in the original version sees the protagonist played by actor Bryan Cranston (Walter White of Breaking Bad). The adaptation is quite faithful to the original even if the Italian version seems to pay for an inevitable paternalistic and melodramatic drift and a rejection of the rawness of certain scenes (and Accorsi cannot get rid of the character of Leonardo Notte). Since the first episode, the series combines tension and twists, at the bottom of which stands the oldest of the questions: what are the boundaries between good and evil?
