Gangnam-gu to hold a Taekwondo competition festival for foreigners!

Gangnam-gu is hosting a foreign Taekwondo competition festival. Gangnam-gu (Mayor Seongmyeong Cho), a city where dreams gather and a city that draws the future, will host the ‘2024 Foreign Taekwondo Competition Festival’ at Kukkiwon from 9:00 to 18:00 on the 28th.

Gangnam-gu has been hosting the Foreigner Taekwondo Competition Festival in cooperation with the Kukkiwon and the Foreigner Taekwondo Culture Association in Korea since 2022. Approximately 900 foreign Taekwondo practitioners from about 20 countries, including USFK, foreign students and workers, and multicultural families, will participate in this event to showcase their skills and share and communicate the Taekwondo techniques and spirit. From August 23 to September 11, the competition was promoted and participants were recruited for USFK, foreign support groups, and multicultural family support centers.

The competition on this day will proceed in the following order: ▲Morning competition (9:00-11:00) with Poomsae competition and sparring preliminary rounds ▲Opening ceremony (11:00-12:00) ▲Afternoon competition (1:00-5:00 PM) with sparring finals, and award ceremony (5:00 PM). The competition will be divided into student divisions (elementary, middle, and high school) and adult divisions, and will compete in five categories: Poomsae, sparring, hand-kick, speed kick, and high jump kick. Awards and plaques will be awarded based on the rankings in each category.

As a side event, a traditional Korean culture experience event will be held for foreign participants and visitors. ▲Experience programs such as making Hahoe masks, tops, folding ttakji, and pounding tteok. ▲You can enjoy traditional games such as archery, tug-of-war, malttugi, and wangjegichagi. At the photo zone with Kukkiwon in the background, you can take pictures wearing taekwondo uniforms and taste traditional foods such as injeolmi, sikhye, and dalgona.

Gangnam-gu District Mayor Cho Seong-myeong said, “I hope that through this Taekwondo Competition Festival, foreigners will be able to deeply experience Korean culture through Taekwondo and communicate with each other,” and added, “We will continue to provide various opportunities to communicate with the world through Taekwondo and to widely promote Korea’s traditional culture.”
