On March 9, 1995, employees of the Samsung Electronics mobile phone factory in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do, piled up 150,000 Anycall mobile phones like a mountain under a banner that read this. The products, worth a total of 15 billion won, were smashed and burned by the employees with hammers by hand. This was in response to the order of former Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee, who had ordered, “Collect and incinerate all mobile phones currently on the market,” as the Anycall defects continued. After this scene, which was called the “Anycall cremation,” Samsung Electronics achieved a 51.5% market share in the same year, rising to first place in the Korean mobile phone market for the first time.

Samsung Electronics has also continued its ‘super gap’ heritage in the mobile market. Even in competition with strong competitors such as Motorola and Apple, it has continued to take on experimental challenges under the motto, ‘Without technological innovation, there is no survival.’ Since the launch of the Anycall brand in 1994, it has caused a stir in the industry by releasing the world’s first women-only mobile phone, wristwatch phone, MP3 phone, TV phone, and camera phone.

Samsung’s mobile super gap heritage continued into the smartphone era with the ‘Galaxy’ brand, which means Milky Way. On the first day of the opening of ‘CTIA 2010′ in Las Vegas, USA in March 2010, Shin Jong-kyun, then head of Samsung Electronics’ wireless business division (president), announced the launch of the Galaxy smartphone and declared, “Smartphones are no longer products used only by a select few early adopters. Samsung Electronics will lead the ‘smartphone popularization era’ where everyone uses a smartphone.”

The ‘Galaxy S3′, released in 2012, surpassed 20 million units in global sales in just 100 days, the shortest period in Samsung Electronics’ mobile phone history. Samsung Electronics became the world’s No. 1 smartphone company in 2011, and succeeded in rising to No. 1 in the global mobile phone market in 2012. Since then, it has continued to challenge itself with innovation, such as the release of a foldable smartphone (Galaxy Fold, 2019) and the first AI smartphone (Galaxy S24, 2024).

Recently, Samsung Electronics has been under fierce pursuit by Chinese companies such as Xiaomi and Huawei in the premium mobile market. According to market research firm Counterpoint Research on the 19th, Xiaomi surpassed Apple (12.0%) and followed Samsung Electronics (17.5%) with 12.5% of the global smartphone market in terms of sales last month. Huawei, which surpassed Samsung in foldable phone market share in the second quarter (April-June), recently released the world’s first triple foldable phone. Samsung Electronics stated, “We will continue to lead AI phone technology through the first artificial intelligence (AI) smartphone, the Galaxy S24, and continue to achieve ultra-gap innovation such as developing new form factors.”
