For eight days, a host of women confront the captivating nature of the pearl of southern Morocco and put their physical condition to the test, by undertaking some fairly tough stages, while combining physical endurance, emotions and discovery of this beautiful region.

The participants prove, through this raid, that sport is indeed a vector of affirmation for women, young, old, students, mothers… in short, they are all led through this competition to surpass themselves and to perseverance.

This year marks the 7th edition of the “Sahraouiya” sports challenge, which is held from March 13 to 20 in Dakhla, under the banner of active solidarity, to promote the values of solidarity, through an experience that marks all those who live it.

Organised by the association “Lagon Dakhla for the development of sport and cultural activities” and the Dakhla Attitude group, “Sahraouiya” is a real sporting springboard which this year again brings together teams from all four corners of the Kingdom, but also from the African continent and Europe.

The president of the “Lagon Dakhla” Association and co-organizer of “Sahraouiya”, Laila Ouachi, affirmed in a statement to MAP that this year’s edition is taking place in “rather special conditions”, given the context of the covid-19 pandemic, adding that this event is being held in strict compliance with the preventive health measures recommended by the competent authorities.

This edition sees the participation of 35 teams, coming from different regions of Morocco, African countries and Europe, said Ms. Ouachi, noting that the participants “will go throughout the competition to discover the extraordinary city of Dakhla, in order to support the causes of solidarity and empathy.”

“These are women from diverse backgrounds for one and the same cause: self-improvement and female solidarity,” she said, indicating that this experience “takes place in a very good atmosphere and will forever mark the minds of the participants.”

For her part, TV presenter Laila Haddioui, who is participating in this raid for the first time, said that the Sahraouiya competition is extraordinary and takes place in a very friendly atmosphere, stressing that it instills in the participants team spirit, challenge and self-improvement.

She also expressed her joy and pride in being part of this adventure which has a noble objective, that of supporting associations, noting that she gives, with her partner, the best of themselves to successfully complete all the tests.

The participants support multi-purpose associations, including the “sport dans la ville” association, which ensures the establishment and supervision of sports centres in difficult neighbourhoods, and the “Au cœur de l’amitié euro-marocaine” association, working to protect children in difficult situations from the risks of delinquency.

Among the associations supported in this competition is “Jood”, which is a voluntary citizen movement, driven by the will of those who want to act to help the homeless and thus allow them to regain a minimum of dignity through actions promoting social ties to achieve the professional and social integration of the greatest number of homeless people.

Participants in the 7th edition of Sahraouiya also support the Moroccan Association for Support and Assistance to People with Down Syndrome (AMSAT), which helps young people with Down syndrome and their families, in order to convey to them a message of courage and perseverance in their daily fight for better integration into society.

This year, the Belgian presenter and former Miss Belgium, Tatiana Silva is the patron of “Sahraouiya” and its spirit of solidarity. She is also an ambassador for UNICEF, and is committed daily to several causes and associations.

Initiated under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, “Sahraouiya” is a plea for solidarity that goes beyond the boundaries of language and culture.
