The newspaper reports that Shcherbatih, who is also a member of the LOK executive committee, questioned the decisions of the National Armed Forces in a video posted on the social site “TikTok”. He dubbed the video in Russian.
“What did they come here for? Are they all (soldiers, national guards) adequate or not? They show what’s happening in the US on TV, who has a machine gun, they’re crazy. Who can guarantee (security)? No one. The government says there will be training. Okay , isn’t there enough noise for you, kids. Why don’t you fear the war, why don’t you go to the city? ” that’s what Shcherbatykh says in the video in Russian.
LOK president Raimonds Lazdiņš believes that publishing such content on social networks, besides being dressed in the official uniform of the Olympic team, is not permissible and supported. “This issue must be evaluated in the executive committee, and I will suggest that it be referred to the Ethics Commission for consideration,” said Lazdins.
On the other hand, the member of the LOK executive committee, general secretary of the Latvian Cycling Federation, Tom Marks, says that he is unpleasantly surprised by Ščerbatih’s opinion. “National security is the main priority, training in the urban environment is also a very important test of readiness, and I definitely support it, people have been warned and informed about it, it’s no surprise. How else can you prepare for a military threat, if not by training?” asked Marx rhetorically, adding that it is not acceptable for a representative of the LOK executive committee to communicate in Russian, considering the threat posed by Russia.
Shcherbatih has deleted the above video. He said he talked to a friend and realized that he was wrong – if he wants to ask questions of this nature, he should do it in Latvian and in a different tone, he told the newspaper.
Ščerbatihs was elected to the 9th Saeima from the list of the Greens and Farmers’ Union, last year he ran for the parliamentary elections from the list of Ainārs Šleser’s “Latvija first” party, but was not elected.
It has already been reported that from September 3 to October 8, the comprehensive national defense exercises “Namejs 2024” organized by the National Armed Forces will take place throughout Latvia, in which a total of approximately 11,000 Latvian and allied soldiers and national guardsmen will participate.
