The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office’s Investigation Review Committee has become the fuse of the ‘Yoon-Han conflict’ by giving an indictment opinion on the 24th regarding Choi Jae-young’s violation of the Anti-Corruption Act by giving a Dior bag to President Yoon Seok-yeol’s wife, Kim Gun-hee. The pro-Korean group (pro-Han Dong-hoon) emphasized the need for discussions on resolving the Kim Gun-hee issue, saying, “The Investigation Review Committee’s indictment opinion is at the same level as the people.” There is speculation that the conflict between President Yoon Seok-yeol and People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon over the Kim Gun-hee issue could also affect the ruling party’s defection votes during the re-vote on the ‘Kim Gun-hee Special Prosecutor Act.’
A close key figure said in a phone call with the Dong-A Ilbo on the 25th, “Representative Han has been emphasizing the ‘public’s perspective’ on the Ms. Kim issue, but the prosecution’s indictment opinion may be the public’s perspective,” and “The prosecution will be burdened regardless of the conclusion it reaches regarding the Dior bag bribery suspicions based on the investigation review committee’s results regarding Choi.” Representative Han’s position is that a public apology from Ms. Kim is necessary in relation to the Dior bag bribery suspicions.
Within the ruling party, there is keen interest in the impact of the re-vote on the Kim Gun-hee special prosecutor bill. There is also talk that “lawmakers could reach a critical point regarding the Ms. Kim issue.” A senior lawmaker from the Yeongnam region said, “With the suspicions of stock price manipulation at Deutsche Motors, the suspicions of bribery in Dior bags, and the suspicions of intervention in the general election nominations continuing to pile up, even the ruling party lawmakers will inevitably reach their limits.” Another re-elected lawmaker said, “The Yoon-Han conflict over the Ms. Kim issue will have some kind of impact on lawmakers,” and “We will have to wait and see how many votes will defect from the party in the re-vote.” In the 22nd National Assembly, the opposition party has 192 seats, so if 8 votes defect from the ruling party, President Yoon’s right to request a re-vote (veto) will be nullified.
The Office of the President stated on the 25th regarding the recommendation of the Prosecution Investigation Review Committee the day before, “We have no separate position to comment.” An official from the Office of the President said, “It is not appropriate to comment on a matter under investigation.”
The opposition party released a “welcoming comment” regarding the conclusion of the investigation review committee regarding Mr. Choi. Kang Yoo-jung, the floor spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, said in a written briefing, “Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung must immediately accept the recommendation of the second investigation review committee,” and “Both Mr. Choi and Mrs. Kim must be indicted and brought before the court.”
