In connection with publications in some media about the distribution of fake BGN 100 banknotes, the BNB states that the increase in their number in the second quarter of 2024 is due to one type of fake banknotes, which are printed on both sides on a color copier on cellulose white paper with poor image quality.
On the left side of the fake notes, a hologram film designed for another product is stuck, which lacks the hologram effects of the real notes. With this type of fake banknote, there is no imitation of other security features.
They can be easily recognized by checking the security features published on the BNB website in the “Banknotes” section.
During a specialized operation by employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a copier and accompanying materials for the production of this type of fake BGN 100 banknotes were found. A pre-trial proceeding was initiated.
Considering their production method, the materials used and lack of imitation of more than one protection, BNB specialists consider that this type of non-genuine 100 BGN banknotes, 2018 issue, do not pose a threat to the available monetary circulation.
