In the elections of the workers’ union of Hippocrates of Thessaloniki, which take place on Thursday, September 26 (blue amphitheater) from 7 am to 5 pm, the Competitive Initiative for Overthrow participates.
The Struggle Initiative for Overthrow, as it states in its election manifesto, “is the scheme that expresses the world of the struggle, which wants to act collectively with assemblies from below, with struggle committees and coordination. We were at the forefront of all struggles to defend public health, but also in every battle, in the general strikes against the Mitsotakis government, in the anti-racist and anti-fascist rallies, against the war on the side of Palestine, against sexist oppression and destruction of the environment. We are the force of the left that believes in the escalation of the strike and we have confidence in the power of the workers, against the theories of ‘negative correlations’ and the permanent postponement of the games”.

Colleagues, on 9/26 we are voting for the new Board of Directors at the Hippocrates union and for our representatives at the POEDIN conference.
These elections are taking place while the government continues its criminal policy of demolishing and privatizing the public health system. After the abolition of the full and exclusive work of the NHS doctors, the afternoon private surgeries, the dismissal of the EDs and the expansion of contracts, the privatization of mental health in the summer, the complete abandonment of the provincial hospitals, now come the plans for a daily on call in the hospitals of Athens from October and possibly in Thessaloniki immediately after. Patients are forced to endure huge waits in broken infrastructure or to put their hands deep in their pockets to access decent health services, while the health workers experience the intensification, the over-attendance, the forced movements, the humiliating fees.
In Hippocrates, despite the propaganda of the government and the leadership of the union, the situation is going from bad to worse. In the hospital with the highest number of emergency patients nationwide, the waits are enormous, surgeries are performed with a dropper, the air conditioning in the ICU breaks down in the heat, the only CT scanner operates with minimal staff and when it breaks down the whole hospital is blocked, the hosting patients in other clinics is a permanent phenomenon. These are the conditions that lead to incidents of violence against workers in a hospital that, despite Adoni’s statements, the gaps in staff of all specialties are huge, overtime is daily, unpaid days off and vacations dozens, transfers to hospitals in the province continue, the contractors without whom the hospital would collapse remain hostage and the contractors thresh.
Our struggles are the answer to their destructive politics. The health workers have been at the forefront of the struggle since the covid period, breaking the silence that the government wanted to impose, with the mobilizations for the stay of all contract workers, with the continuous strikes and work stoppages, with the grand demonstrations against the dissolution of the provincial hospitals, until the recent rallies against every visit by Georgiadis. We have the power to thwart their plans and demand public health hiring, tenure, raises and funding for a modern public health system that will deliver high quality services to society as a whole.
Adonis is afraid of this power of the organized movement, which is why he slanders the once “heroes” health workers and any worker who resists and exposes the lies of the government as infidels and little people. And not only that, the minister of health bluntly intervenes in the union elections by manipulating the victory of the governing faction, DAKE, in order to have control over the unions and POEDIN, blocking any reaction. The experience of our hospital where the presidency of DAKE in the last term of the board meant that the union functioned as a dissociative mechanism and a press office of the administration, while its action was limited to cutting the pie with a keynote speaker … the hospital administrator. As much as they have now been renamed ACP and talk about an “open” union, they are the ones who for years turned their backs on the administration, ate sushi with the minister mocking the mobilizations of colleagues and together with him they plan to take complete control of the union in order to put a tombstone in the games us.
