The Gangwon International Triennale 2024 will begin its 32-day journey from September 26. Hosted by Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) and organized by Gangwon Cultural Foundation (CEO Shin Hyun-sang) and Pyeongchang-gun (Governor Shim Jae-guk), the Gangwon International Triennale 2024, Korea’s first traveling visual arts festival, will begin its 32-day journey from Thursday, September 26 to Sunday, October 27 at Pyeongchang Trout Performance Experience Center, Woljeongsa Temple, Jinbu Market, and Space Changgong (Jinbu Station) in Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun.

This year’s event will be held under the theme of ‘Ecological Art from the Beneath’, and a total of 77 teams (85 artists) from 22 countries are expected to participate. This is the third and final edition of the ‘Gangwon Triennale in Pyeongchang’, which has been held since 2022 under the theme of ‘Pyeongchang, the Plateau of Art’, and will be held as an international event this year, following Gangwon Artists and Gangwon Kids.

The theme of this Triennale, “From Below,” refers to the microscopic and everyday underground, the soil, and the ground on which humans stand. Reflecting the era of climate crisis, the exhibition concept, inspired by the “ant hole,” realizes an exhibition that minimizes waste and emphasizes an alternative, other-centered attitude and flexibility of thinking.

The main exhibition will be held in five sections, including the main hall of the Pyeongchang Trout Experience Center, the pavilion, Jinbu Public Indoor Playground, Gateball Field, Woljeongsa Temple, and Jinbu Market. In addition, the “Austrian Künstlerhaus Special Exhibition” and “Searching for Artists in Pyeongchang” exhibitions will be held at the Jinbu Station Space Changgong.

The “Austrian Künstlerhaus Special Exhibition” will be held in Chuncheon (September 4-10, Kangwon National University Museum of Art) and Pyeongchang (September 26-October 27, Jinbu Station Space Changgong) under the theme of “Longing for Future” with Tanja Prušnik, President of the Künstlerhaus Association, as the commissioner (chief planner). The “Searching for Artists in Pyeongchang” exhibition will exhibit the works of eight artists who reside in Pyeongchang-gun and engage in various activities.

In addition, the works of the four artists selected through the Gangwon Writer Contest and the top 11 artists will be displayed online and in the window displays of collaborative stores in Jinbu Market as part of the “Gangwon Writer Metaverse Exhibition.”

During the event, an international symposium will be held on September 27th, artist couple Ken and Julia Yonetani will hold a discussion titled ‘Salt, Food, and Ecological Art’ on September 28th, and Parastu Forouhar (Iran), who is active in Germany, will hold a discussion titled ‘Women Artists and Ecological Art, Solidarity and Growth’ on October 5th. The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and all exhibitions are free to view.
