Baekje Historic Areas was registered as the 12th UNESCO World Heritage Site in Korea in 2015. It consists of Gongju Gongsanseong Fortress, King Muryeong’s Tomb and Royal Tomb Garden, which are relics from when Ungjin (present-day Gongju) was the capital (475-538); Buyeo Gwanbuk-ri Site, Busosanseong Fortress, Jeongnimsa Temple Site, Royal Tomb Garden, Naseong, and Iksan Wanggung-ri Site and Mireuksa Temple Site, which were relics from when the capital was moved to Sabi (present-day Buyeo) and until the end (538-660).

The theme of the ‘2024 World Heritage Festival – Baekje Historic Areas’ event hosted by the National Heritage Administration and Baekje World Heritage Center is ‘Exploring the Value of Baekje World Heritage’. In celebration of the 9th anniversary of the World Heritage designation, ‘9 Gifts from Baekje’ was designed to allow visitors to appreciate, explore, and study Baekje art, architecture, and religion. It will be held in Iksan from the 27th to October 3rd, Gongju from the 4th to the 10th of the same month, and Buyeo from the 11th to the 17th.

On the first day in Iksan (the 27th), at the Wanggung-ri Historic Site, the creative performance ‘Appreciating the Vitality of Baekje’ will be held with the theme of ‘Value Appreciation Day’, telling the story of Baekje’s 30th King Mu, and the 4-member tenor group ‘Fortena’ will perform a congratulatory performance. On the first day in Gongju (the 4th of next month), at Gongsanseong Fortress, the theme of ‘Heritage Exploration Day’ will be ‘The Soul of King Muryeong’, performed by vocalist Kim Dong-gyu and an orchestra. On the first day in Buyeo (the 11th), at Jeongnimsa Temple Site, the theme of ‘Cultural Exploration Day’ will be performed with musical actor Nam Gyeong-ju and the ‘Dream Musical’ team, the creative musical ‘Seongwang’s Dream’.

The nine gift programs include the travel product ‘Festival Time Travel’, ‘Exploration 9 Random Box’ where you can receive a box containing one of nine festival souvenirs, ‘Baekje MBTI’ where you can check your MBTI personality type as a Baekje person, ‘Baekje Personal Color’ where you can find a color that suits you and receive a souvenir, ‘Baekje Dessert’ where you can taste desserts using local specialties, ‘Baekje Praise’ where you can perform with local artists, ‘Baekje Stepping Playground’ where you can solve missions related to Baekje history, and ‘Happy Postcard from Baekje’ where you can write postcards to acquaintances.

In particular, the newly introduced board game ‘Baekje Marble’ this year has helped us understand why Baekje World Heritage is important and precious. About 100 people who passed the preliminary round will compete in the final round in Iksan on September 28, Gongju on October 5, and Buyeo on the 12th. You can also participate on-site through the ‘Baekje World Heritage Exploration Team’ board game. For more information, please visit the website.
