Schools Across Greece Pause Classes for 11th National Day of School Sports

by time news

On Friday, classes will not take place in schools across the country as all students, without exception, will learn the secrets of sports as part of the 11th National School Sports Day.

This year, September 27 will be an “informal holiday” for students, as classes will not be conducted in schools. However, students will still go to school, but there will be no lessons, only sports activities.

“We Exercise Together”

According to an announcement from the Ministry of Education, on Friday, September 27, classes will not be held in schools due to the National School Sports Day, but sports activities and events will take place.

As specified in the circular, on that day, there will be no classes, but students will participate in sports and be introduced to the secrets of sports as part of the 11th National School Sports Day.

With the slogan “We Exercise Together. We Enhance Quality of Life,” the Directorate of Physical Education of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports invites all primary and secondary schools to implement sports actions/activities or/and events, which can take place within and/or outside the school grounds, throughout the school hours, in order to highlight the benefits and significance of physical activity, exercise, and sports for health and improving quality of life.

What to Know About Absences

With the announcement of the National School Sports Day, students were thrilled that there would be no classes that day, and many did not hesitate to think about staying home instead of going to school. However, such a choice would load them with absences, and especially middle and high school students should be careful as absences on that day cannot be justified, meaning they will have mandatory unjustified absences, with all the implications this has on the final calculation of absences, as the distinction between justified and unjustified absences has now returned.

As explicitly stated in the Government Gazette for middle and high schools, “The absence of a student from cultural or sports events that take place within the framework of the school timetable is considered an unjustified absence from the teaching hours provided by the timetable on the day they are held.”
