Regarding the suspicion of external pressure on the investigation into the death of Private First Class Cha Mo of the Marine Corps, it was revealed that former Marine Corps Investigation Division Chief (Colonel) Park Jeong-hoon sent a written inquiry to President Yoon Seok-yeol through the military court regarding the “VIP fury theory,” to which President Yoon responded that he could not respond due to national security reasons.

At the 7th trial of the ‘Colonel Park’s case of insubordination and defamation of a superior’ held at the Central District Military Court in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the 3rd, Colonel Park’s defense team filed a fact-finding request asking President Yoon whether he had made statements such as “If you punish a division commander for something like this,” regarding the VIP rage theory, and the court accepted this.

Then, at the 8th trial held on the 25th, it was revealed that President Yoon’s side had responded the day before (the 24th) in the name of the Chief of Staff to the President, saying, “We ask for your understanding that we cannot respond to the requests for fact-finding from your court as they are related to national security.”

The fact-finding inquiry requested by Colonel Park’s side reportedly included whether he made a statement to the effect that “it was wrong to indict Lim Seong-geun (former Marine Division Commander) and others,” and whether President Yoon spoke with then-Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop on July 31st of last year, the day of the rage rumor, at 11:54 AM on the Blue House extension number (02-800-7070), and if so, what the conversation was about. A fact-finding inquiry is essentially similar to a written investigation. However, there is no compulsion for the party receiving the request to respond. The trial that day was held a day before Private Chae would have been discharged on the 26th, the day he would have been discharged if he were alive.

The Democratic Party of Korea’s spokesperson, Han Min-soo, criticized in a commentary that day, “I cannot help but laugh at (President Yoon’s) shameless excuses,” and “This refusal to answer is no different from admitting that President Yoon is behind the pressure on the investigation.” He also said, “We will mobilize all means to enforce the special prosecutor’s law on Private First Class Chae and uncover the truth about the pressure on the investigation.”
