An unscrupulous gang is collecting money from traders in three markets (Nagar Plaza, City Plaza and Zaker Plaza) in Fulbaria area of Dhaka South City Corporation. Owners claimed that those who directly and indirectly controlled the markets during the previous Awami League government, are now collecting new fees.

It is known that this market is located in three 34 ward areas. On December 8, 2020, Dakshin City evicted the shops constructed in the parking lot of Fulbaria Supermarket-2 in A, B and C blocks of City Plaza, Nagar Plaza and Zaker Supermarket. There are 531 legal shops in these three markets and 911 illegal ones. These shops have been evicted due to illegal allotment. But after the fall of the Awami League government, the unscrupulous gang is again trying to build shops in the parking lot of the three markets. Now they are trying to build a shop again in the vacated parking lot of the three markets. BNP wants to collect subscriptions and build shops in the name of leader Ishraq Hossain.

The president of these three markets, Delwar Hossain Delu, complained that this gang collected money from the traders of these three markets under the umbrella of former mayors Syed Khokon and Fazle Noor Taps while Awami League was in power. If I stop them, I am harassed in various ways. They now want to collect dues from traders and build shops in the name of BNP leader Ishraq Hossain.

The traders complained that after the fall of the Awami League government, 25 thousand rupees were being taken from each shop in the name of development of the traders. During the regime of former mayor Fazle Noor Tapas, the shops built illegally outside the design were demolished and parking was done in the parking lot. This parking is leased to Raita Enterprises. Ward No. 33 councilor Awal Hossain looked after it. After the end of the Awami regime, efforts are being made to build shops in the parking places of the markets again. Ward number 34 councilor Mamun himself has repeatedly blocked the construction of shops. At one stage Councilor Mamun locked the parking gate. Now several traders in the market have complained that money is being withdrawn from the previous 531 traders in the name of legal assistance.

When speaking to the concerned branch of South City, an official said, ‘No shop will be allowed to be rebuilt outside the market design. And the administrators of DSCC have urged the businessmen not to pay any kind of contribution here.’

Several businessmen of the market complained and said, “After the fall of the Awami League government, even though there is no valid committee in the markets, Councilor Awal’s people have changed the identity of the Awami League and started extorting anew.” The demand of ordinary traders, if the traders are managing the market, why did they not take the permission of the City Corporation?’ However, there was no statement from Awal in this regard.

Kaizer Mohammad Farabi, the chief property officer of Dhaka South City, said that we have not received any complaint in this regard. Action will be taken if complaints are received in this regard.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) administrator Dr. Mah. When I called Sher Ali for his statement, he did not answer the phone.
