Palau, almost 1,300 patients without a GP: «Surreal situation»

by time news

«In Palau, in a few days, 1,280 people will join the many residents who have been without basic medical care for almost two years».

The opposition council group Palau Avanti denounces this, explaining that «Dr. Karim will be forced to interrupt his service as a general practitioner on September 30th to dedicate himself exclusively to the medical emergency». An «absolutely surreal solution: since doctors cannot be found to reduce the workload of those in service, we abolish basic medical care», comment the city councilors Mario Tamponi, Davide Pirredda and Luca Vittorio Fresu.

The Palau Avanti group admits that “the problem is serious and complex almost everywhere, but here in Palau it seems worse than in the places near us, about which we are able to get information.”

The councilors would have liked to talk about the problem, they write, “in an open City Council, to show that we are united and compact at least on this issue, beyond the divisions of the factions or political ideas, secondary things in the face of the lack of medical assistance and therefore the risks to health, which concerns everyone, regardless of how one thinks and how one votes. The answer on this point has never arrived, however – the 3 councilors affirm – therefore evidently the mayor, his assessors and the councilors of the majority leading the country are not interested in the topic”.
