Coach Hong Myung-bo, who was summoned to the National Assembly due to controversy over the unfairness of the process of selecting the head coach of the national soccer team, is being criticized by soccer fans for saying, “In the end, I thought I would serve the national team.”
On the 24th, Coach Hong appeared as a witness at the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee’s current affairs inquiry held at the National Assembly and apologized, saying, “I am deeply sorry for causing public outrage in all aspects of soccer, including the appointment of the coach,” but also firmly stated, “I do not believe there was any unfairness or preferential treatment in the process. I have no intention of resigning from my position as coach.”
Also, regarding the reason for accepting the position of national team coach, he said, “I was happy as Ulsan HD coach, but when Director Lee Im-saeng came to me, it was difficult to ignore the difficulties of Korean soccer.” He added, “I wanted to run away after experiencing failure during the Brazil World Cup, but in the end, I thought I should serve the national team. A sense of responsibility and mission led to this decision.”
Director Hong’s ‘service’ remarks have added fuel to the public’s anger. Some point out that the expression ‘service’ is not appropriate for Director Hong, who is known to receive a high annual salary of about 2 billion won. Earlier, Director Lee Im-saeng said regarding the terms of the contract with Coach Hong, “I cannot reveal the details such as the annual salary, but I think that Korean coaches should be treated no less than foreign coaches,” and reported that he signed a contract that is not inferior to that of foreign coaches. The previous national team coach, Coach Klinsmann, received an annual salary of approximately 3 billion won, and Coach Bento received an annual salary of approximately 1.95 billion won.
