The students who took the test were in all 347the South Tyroleans who have overcome it 94. All ten non-EU students have confirmed their enrolment, of the 50 remaining, approximately half are from South Tyrol. Another 60 members are expected next year.

The Department and the Local Health Authority are moving to counteract this the shortage of doctorsanchor students to the territory and increase the attractiveness of the province as a place of study. The aim is to seek high clinical quality and excellent career paths. The Province, in collaboration with the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, the University Center for Health Professions and the Local Health Authority, is therefore launching the degree in Medicine and Surgery in English – Medicine and Surgery. The course, which lasts six years, has the Claudiana as its teaching location.

Internships in Italian and German are planned at the facilities of the seven hospital network. The Province, after evaluating the possibility of collaborating with various universities, chose the “Cattolica” of Milan. The reasons are listed in the resolution: offering a curriculum in English; high-quality research network and teacher networks; many years of collaboration experience with the Claudiana School of Health; availability to collaborate with universities in German-area countries. To support the costs of university fees – 18,000 euros per year, divided into two tranches of 9,000 – income and merit-based scholarships guaranteed by Cattolica will be available.

Furthermore, students in possession of the German/Italian bilingualism certificate at B2 level of the CEFR can request provincial funding but must undertake to practice as a doctor in Alto Adige for four years and within ten years of obtaining their degree. Horand Meier – medical coordinator of the Clinical Government Operational Unit of the Province who, in collaboration with the managers of the Cattolica, coordinated the implementation of the degree course in Medicine, says that the new faculty also means greater opportunities for exchange between specialists, further training programs in addition to those already existing and greater career opportunities, of particular interest to younger doctors. «I am convinced that the impact of Medicine will go beyond the “simple” training of doctors. Ultimately all citizens will benefit.”

The Province is also working to build the university campus which does not yet exist. It will be built near the current Claudiana and will include, in addition to the existing building, the new University of Medicine (new building) and the new student residence (another new building) which will have 200 beds, an internal canteen with 100 seats, a bar, a kitchen and 40 parking spaces in an underground garage. The structure will also be equipped with a library, a meeting room, a laundry room and administrative offices and rooms for service staff. The amount for the construction of the student residence amounts to approximately 45 million euros in total, of which 36.4 million euros for the works, 4.7 million euros for the furnishings and 3.9 million for the technical and ancillary expenses.
