The first premiere of this year’s season of the Zlín City Theater will be the comedy Apartment in the Plaza Hotel by the late American playwright Neil Simon. Directed by Janusz Klimsza, the Saturday premiere is followed by the nearest reruns on September 24 and October 16.
The Zlín Theater chose love as the subtitle of this season. “Simon’s comedy Apartment in the Plaza Hotel is an exemplary title for the theme of our season, because it presents love in many forms: marital love, parental love, lover’s love, but also platonic love,” says playwright Vladimír Fekar.
Three comedic stories take place in a hotel suite. In the first, the couple celebrates their wedding anniversary in a period of marital crisis. In the second briefcase, viewers will witness the meeting of a Hollywood producer with his former student love. In the third story, the bride’s parents have to deal with the fact that their daughter locked herself in the bathroom on her wedding day.
Simon’s theatrical way of thinking is close to the director Janusz Klimsz, who likes the American’s comedies. “I guess by nature I gravitate towards sad comedies,” says the director. According to him, Simon’s plays combine a perfectly mastered comedic craft and a special thoughtfulness and empathy for the characters in the comedy.
The audience will see the actors Rostislav Marek, Petra Králová, Milana Gorska, Zdenek Lambor, Maria Vojtěchová, Gustav Řezníček and Marta Bačíková. The suite at the Plaza Hotel may also be known to the public from the film adaptation of the same name filmed in 1971.
