Liverpool defeated West Ham 5 to 1 on Wednesday (25) and qualified for the Round of 16 of the 2024/25 English League Cup. The victory at Anfield, coming from behind, featured goals from Diogo Jota (2x), Cody Gakpo (2x), and Mohamed Salah. Jarell Quansah scored an own goal for the visitors.

How the match went

Despite playing at home, Liverpool saw West Ham create the better opportunities in the first half. In the 17th minute, the visiting team had a goal disallowed for offside during a counter-attack. Three minutes later, however, they opened the scoring. Following a corner kick, the defense of Arne Slot’s team got confused, and Jarell Quansah sent the ball into his own net. Trailing in the scoreline, Liverpool pushed forward and equalized in the 24th minute with a header from Diogo Jota. In the build-up to the goal, which included an assist from Chiesa, the linesman did not call offside at the start of the play. It’s worth noting that this phase of the competition does not include VAR.

Liverpool, aiming for their 11th trophy in this competition, needed only three minutes to turn the game around. Diogo Jota, once again, found the net, leaving goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski with no chance. In the 28th minute, with Salah, the reds reached their third goal. With a tumultuous scenario, West Ham complicated matters even further when Edson Alvarez was sent off. There was still time for Cody Gakpo to score the fourth and fifth goals to secure the victory.
