He said this in a speech given in Bengali at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly at the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations Headquarters on Friday (September 27) at 10:30 a.m. local time in New York.

Dr. Yunus said, ‘Without political liberation and social and economic awakening, it is not possible to achieve success in ensuring peace and security. Almost a decade ago, the world community unanimously formulated Agenda 2030. We have all committed our collective aspirations and beliefs to the achievement of these universal Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moreover, only less than 15 percent of the targets have been achieved. Clearly many developing countries are lagging behind in this regard. Developing countries face a shortfall in SDG financing equivalent to around US$2.5 to 4 trillion a year.’

He said, ‘Countries like Bangladesh are at greater risk due to the developing world’s debt burden, declining financial capacity and the damaging effects of climate change. We hope that the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development will address such complex and structural issues.’

The chief adviser said, ‘Multilateral financial institutions should work with a common goal so that all countries can use resources and opportunities equally. They can give social business an important role in their programs. To deal specifically with the realities of low-income countries – that stimulate business enterprise and individual creativity, and that specifically support disadvantaged populations.’

He also said, ‘In this case, it is essential to stop the flow of illegal money and the smuggling of resources from developing countries. International cooperation should be strengthened to bring back the smuggled resources from developing countries. We hope that the International Tax Convention for Prevention of Tax Evasion will be adopted soon.’
