After the incidents in the stands at the Atanasio Girardot that prevented the match between Atlético Nacional and Junior from finishing, the Medellín Mayor’s Office decided to impose sanctions on the venue where the Verde plays, with 4 measures announced by Federico Gutiérrez.
The match between Verdolagas and Tiburones had to be stopped at 54 minutes, when the home team was winning 2-0 with goals from Hinestroza and Román.
Immediately after the second goal, incidents occurred in the stands, leaving many injured, and the referee had no choice but to suspend the match.
Dimayor confirmed the suspension on its social media, and decisions are expected from a committee that will determine what will happen with the final result of the match.
On the day after everything that happened, the Mayor’s Office began to take action and implemented several measures in response to the incident, which were commented on by Mayor Federico Gutiérrez.
What sanctions will Atanasio Girardot receive following the incidents in Nacional-Junior?
The mayor confirmed four “initial” sanctions while the investigation continues.
1) Total closure of the Atanasio Girardot stadium for the next two Nacional matches
2) Additional closure of two more dates for the North Stand
3) Ban on the entry of flags for two dates throughout the stadium, while no flags will be allowed in the North Stand for the entire tournament
4) Border closure for visiting fans for the rest of the semester and all of 2025.
Additionally, the mayor stated that the aggressors will be identified in order to determine which fan group they belong to, and thus impose an additional punishment: they will not be allowed to enter the stadium for 1 to 3 years.
Which Nacional matches will be affected by the Medellín Mayor’s Office sanctions?
Atlético Nacional will have to serve the two-game suspension at home against Boyacá Chicó and Envigado.
The public will return for the match against Santa Fe. Furthermore, the paisa classic against Medellín will not be affected by this measure.
