Sport is not only good for the body, but also generates enormous benefits for the entire country.

The Italian sports economy is worth 120 billion euros and in 2023 contributed to the 3.9% of GDPemploying over 400,000 people. This data emerges from a new report by Banca Ifis, presented at the Italian Embassy in London on 20 September during a round table.

The number of Italians who practice sports grew from 62.8% in 2022 to 64.8% in 2023, exceeding the 38 million. Ifis analysts attribute this increase to the successes of Italian athletes, major sporting events and a favorable regulatory framework.

The report also highlights the importance of sports tourism: in 2023, 38.7 million people, Italian and foreign, traveled to attend sporting events in Italy, spending almost 11.9 billion euros. Football, cycling and motorsports (thanks to Formula 1 and MotoGP) are the most loved, followed by volleyball, tennis and basketball.

During the meeting, the economic benefits expected from the projects were also discussed Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Ifis analysts estimate that the event could generate a value of 5.3 billion euros, thanks also to the new infrastructures. However, the costs of holding the event are estimated at 5.7 billion euros by Openpolis Foundation.

Big events aside, there is no doubt that sport has a positive value especially for those who practice it, helping to improve their physical and mental well-being. More sport – explains the Ifis report – means less need for medical care and therefore savings for the national health system.

The Italian community in London demonstrated its enthusiasm by participating en masse in theItaly Runa 5km run organized by the Italian Consulate in London on 22 September, on the occasion of the Day of Italian Sport in the World.

The non-competitive event, open to all, saw over 1,000 people of all ages run together, despite the pouring rain of the morning, filling the green lawn of Holland Park with blue colour.

A true sports celebration and a nice moment of aggregation for the Italians of the capital.
