The police informed that at 9:50 p.m. they received information about an accident at the “Samsonas Rally Utena” rally taking place in Utena. In the initial reports, it was mentioned that around 20 people were injured when the car drove into the crowd of spectators.
Eyewitnesses of the event told the portal “Delfi” that one person died, but several others are being revived. Police confirmed that medics found one person dead and 14 people injured.
“Delfi” informs that the hay bales, which were used to mark the direction of turns in the rally, were knocked down by other cars, so the Latvian crew did not notice the turn and drove into the spectators.
Autosport portal Go4speed reported that the tragic accident was experienced by the Latvian crew Kristaps Telle/Kaspars Grīva.
The organizers of the rally announced that after the tragic accident that happened at 21:47, the rally competition has been canceled and the Lithuanian Motorsport Federation is continuing the investigation of this event.
“Delfi” found out that the officials in connection with the tragic accident have started a pre-trial investigation according to Article 132, Part 3 of the Lithuanian Criminal Code, manslaughter due to negligence.
