TRENTO. “More and more frequently in the city cemetery, many elderly deceased people have funerals with very few or even none of the faithful. Others don’t even have anyone requesting their ashes.” Thus the archbishop of Trento Lauro Tisi on the occasion of Mass for the repose of deceased bishops and priestsofficiated in the cathedral of Trento.

“There is something serious in our society that has sometimes transformed the moment of death simply into the disposal of waste. I use strong words, but the fact that so many elderly people leave without anyone’s company forces me to raise my voice and to remember that a people who do not honor their dead is a people who are running out of reasons to live“, Tisi said.

During the ceremony, the prelate remembered the diocesan priests who died during eight years of episcopate and noted that “it is not enough to have life and health, we need reasons to live and at this moment we lack the reasons to live”.

Finally, Tisi issued a warning to the local Church, speaking of the risk that “the rites are celebrated by men and women without faith” and that the prayers and rituals are “songs of men and women who seek themselves rather than seek Jesus” .
