The joint presidency of the governments of the United States of America and Italy issued a joint statement calling for an end to the political stalemate in Libya and progress towards sustainable stability, following a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly week,

The meeting was attended by senior officials from Algeria, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Qatar, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

The statement stressed the strong support of the international community for Libya’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity.

According to the statement; The co-chairs welcomed the briefing provided by the Acting Charge d’Affairs of the UN Mission, Stephanie Khoury, who briefed on the ongoing efforts to facilitate dialogue between the Libyan parties.

The statement stressed the importance of moving towards stability, ending the current transitional period and agreeing on a reliable road map to hold free, fair and comprehensive presidential and parliamentary elections.

The statement also praised the progress made by the United Nations mission in enabling the Libyan parties to reach a compromise on appointing new leadership for the Central Bank of Libya, stressing the need to implement this agreement to ensure transparency and accountability.

The statement stated that Libya’s oil resources are for the benefit of all Libyans, calling on all parties to allow the full resumption of oil production without disruption, interference or politicization.

The statement renewed the participants’ support for the ceasefire agreement concluded on October 23, 2020, including its call for the withdrawal of mercenaries from Libya without delay.

The statement welcomed the commitments of the 5+5 Joint Military Committee and the Chiefs of Staff towards the reunification of Libyan military and security institutions, calling for strengthening security coordination and information exchange between Libyan security forces throughout the country.
