Restaurant review: The “Rubens” in Düsseldorf

The “Rubens” in Düsseldorf-Pempelfort (north of the old town) is a popular, often well-stocked restaurant serving Austrian cuisine, a welcome change from many pubs that offer a more rustic fare and always loud. On this Thursday, the house, which looks unassuming from the outside but is bright and cozy from the inside (which also has comfortable tables in the wine cellar), is alive but relaxed. The main reason for guests is that although they offer four menus, each dish can also be ordered individually. Chef Ruben Baumgart (hence the name) offers traditional and – shall we say – interpreted dishes, both with an unmistakable Austrian profile.
