Day of free eye surgeries in Guatemala for World Sight Day

Each second Thursday of October is celebrated on World Sight Daya date that highlights the importance of visual health and how essential it is to take care of your eyesight. Vision allows us to perceive the world, carry out daily activities such as reading, driving, working or socializing, and also contributes to balance, coordination and emotional connection with our environment. From appreciating art to recognizing facial expressions, our eyes enrich the human experience.

Within the framework of this celebration, the visualize eye hospital will carry out a day of free eye surgeries in Guatemala City, San Benito, Petén and Quetzaltenango. This institution has held similar events in previous years, providing ophthalmological care to people with limited resources.

The motto of World Sight Day 2024 is “Love Your Eyes,” with a special focus on children’s eye health, highlighting the need to take care of their eyes from an early age. Under this motto, the institution will increase the number of donated surgeries, dedicating a portion of these to child care. During the day, a total of 450 procedures will be performed: 350 will be cataract interventions for adults over 40 years of age, and 100 will be for children under 12 years of age with visual pathologies correctable by surgery.

Details of the day for adults over 40 years of age

Las cataract surgeriesaimed at people over 40 years of age, will be held at the beginning of October, starting at 6:00 a.m. on the following dates and places:

  • October 3 and 4 at the Vincent Pescatore Hospital, located on 4a. Avenida and 17 Calle, Barrio 3 de Abril, San Benito, Petén
  • October 7 and 8 at the Hospital Visualiza Quetzaltenango, on 6a. 15-19 street, Zone 3 of Xela
  • October 10 at the Visualiza Central Ophthalmological Hospital, on 5a. Avenida 11-44, Zone 9 of Guatemala City

Interested persons must present themselves on the day of the event to be evaluated. If they qualify after medical evaluation, they will be operated on that same day. The requirements are the following:

  • Being a person of limited resources
  • Not having been a patient or having previously undergone surgery at Visualiza
  • Present cataracts in both eyes, according to medical evaluation
  • Be over 40 years old
  • Present identification document (DPI)
  • Arrive accompanied by an adult
  • Have adequate blood sugar control, with levels not exceeding 200 mg/dL
  • Maintain blood pressure within a maximum range of 170/90
