Meteorological autumn has started in Latvia /

Meteorological autumn begins when the average air temperature remains below +15 degrees for five consecutive days, and its beginning is the first of these days.

On Friday, September 27, the average air temperature in Latvia was still less than +16 degrees, but on Saturday it dropped below +14 degrees, and weather forecasts show that the coming days will be colder – the average air temperature is expected to be below +10 degrees.

The average date on which meteorological autumn begins in Latvia during the period of the current norm, i.e. 1991-2020, is August 31. Last year, it came only on October 4, beating the record for the later start of autumn by 17 days.

Meteorological summer this year in Latvia started on May 16, thus its length reached 135 days. This is a repeated record for the longest summer. The same long meteorological summer in Latvia was in 2004.

At four observation stations in Vidzeme – Madon, Priekuli, Rūjien and Zosēni – the meteorological autumn started on September 19 this year, and the meteorological summer continued until September 27 in the rest of Latvia.

The meteorological summer in Riga started on May 15 and ended on September 27, its length reached 136 days. Last year, the record of the longest meteorological summer was broken in the capital – it started on May 11 and ended only on October 3, the length of the meteorological summer reached 146 days.

On the night of Monday and Tuesday, frost is expected in many places in Latvia, the air temperature will drop to -2 degrees in places, warns LVĜMC. Previously, such a low air temperature in the country was on May 12 of this year.
