The Russian Defense Ministry announced today that its forces have repelled six new attempts by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to enter the southwestern Kursk region. The ministry added that the Russian army has taken control of the village of Makeevka in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk region, Reuters reported.
The Ministry announced on the social network “Telegram” that its forces, with air and artillery support, repelled the attempts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to enter the Kursk region near the village of Novy Put, about 80 km from the city of Suja – a strategic settlement from where Russian natural gas exported to Europe via Ukraine.
On August 6, the Ukrainian Air Force carried out the largest foreign invasion of Russia since World War II, crossing the border into Kursk Oblast, supported by drones and heavy weaponry, including Western-made.
Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his forces controlled a hundred settlements in Kursk Oblast, an area of more than 1,300 square km. Russian sources disputed these figures, and Russia said it had retaken some settlements in a counterattack.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that 50 Ukrainian soldiers were killed and wounded in successive attempts to cross into the Kursk region. It added that one enemy tank, four armored vehicles and a car were destroyed.
Reuters could not immediately confirm or deny the reports from the battlefield. The Ukrainian side has not yet commented.
