Hyunmoo-5, maximum warhead weight reaches 8 tons
Possible to hit North Korean command center 100m underground
“B-1B deployment, a symbol of showing off the ROK-US alliance”

The military will unveil the ‘Hyunmoo-5’ ballistic missile for the first time at the Armed Forces Day ceremony held at Seoul Airport in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do on the 1st of next month and at the street parade held in the area between Gwanghwamun and Sungnyemun in Seoul. Hyunmoo-5 is called a ‘monster missile’ as it is equipped with the world’s heaviest warhead.

Hyunmoo-5 is a high-mass, high-yield ballistic missile that overwhelms North Korean missiles, and is the core force of the ‘three-axis system’ Mass Punishment and Retaliation (KMPR) that will destroy the Pyongyang command center in case of emergency. On Armed Forces Day last year, the actual Hyunmoo-4 (warhead weight 2 tons) first appeared, but only a few seconds of test launch footage of the more powerful Hyunmoo-5 had previously been released.

The maximum warhead weight of Hyunmoo-5 is 8 tons. It is almost twice as powerful as the upgraded KN-23 equipped with a very large commercial warhead (4.5 tons) that North Korea recently unveiled, and is capable of completely destroying even a North Korean command bunker hidden deeper than 100 meters underground.

Our military, which cannot possess nuclear weapons, began developing Hyunmoo-5 immediately after North Korea’s fourth nuclear test in 2016 with the goal of destroying North Korea’s command center in the event of an emergency. After a successful test launch last year, it entered mass production. A military official said, “Hyunmoo-5 will destroy the Pyongyang command center as soon as North Korea uses nuclear weapons against South Korea.”

In addition to Hyunmoo-5, a large number of core three-axis system forces are expected to appear in the Armed Forces Day street parade. The military said that this was intended to send a strong warning against North Korea’s complex provocations, including a series of ‘filth balloon’ terrorist attacks against South Korea and ballistic missile launches, and the possibility of a seventh nuclear test ahead of the US presidential election.

It is reported that the US Air Force’s B-1B strategic bomber (pictured), known as the ‘Swan of Death’, will also participate in this Armed Forces Day ceremony for the first time. It is reported that the B-1B will fly from Guam on the morning of the 1st and fly over the event venue (Seoul Airport) with our Air Force fighter jets.

The B-1B is not armed with nuclear weapons, but its conventional weapons capability (57 tons) is superior to the B-2 (22 tons) and B-52 (31 tons) bombers. Long-range air-to-ground missiles (JASSM) with a maximum range of 925 km can simultaneously strike North Korea’s nuclear and missile bases and underground bunkers. Additionally, it is capable of supersonic flight, making it a key strategic asset of the United States that can be deployed from Guam to Korea in an emergency in just two hours. A military official said, “The deployment of the B-1B has the meaning of showing off the ironclad ROK-US alliance and celebrating the establishment of our military’s Strategic Command, which is officially launched on Armed Forces Day.”
