A young man named Karimul Islam (22) died after being shot by the police in Jatrabari of the capital on August 5 during the anti-discrimination student movement. He died in the ICU of the old burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 5:30 am on Monday (September 30). As such, he died after 56 days.

Karimul died after 56 days of fighting

Khalu Azizul Islam of Karimul, who died in Dhaka Medical, said that their house is in Kacharhati village of Lakhai upazila of Habiganj. Karimul used to rent a house in front of Jatrabari Qutubkhali Noor Mosque with his wife Maina Akhtar and worked as a laborer in Jatrabari raw market. Karimul is the eldest of the four brothers. He got married a year ago. Wife Maina is currently five months pregnant.

Azizul Islam said that around 3 o’clock on August 5, some students called him and told him that Karimul was injured in police firing in front of Jatrabari police station. He was taken to Dhaka Medical. Later they went to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical and found Karimul injured.

He also said that since then he was being treated there. He was shot in the chest, snout and right hand. He also underwent several surgeries. However, it was not possible to extract the bullet from the chest. His physical condition started deteriorating since last 10-12 days. Later he was taken to ICU. He died early this morning while undergoing treatment there.

Nur Uddin, a friend who was with Karimul on the day of the agitation, said that they had been carrying out the agitation program in Jatrabari area since the morning of August 5. Karimul and Noor Uddin were still together when Jatrabari police station was surrounded by protesters after noon. Suddenly, all the policemen came out from inside the police station and started firing mercilessly on the numerous protestors who were under the flyover. Then Nur Uddin ran towards Kajla and Karimul ran towards Jatrabari intersection. After that the two basically separated. A few hours later it was reported that Karimul had been shot.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Camp Incharge (Inspector) Md. Farooq confirmed the death and said that Karimul’s body has been kept in the morgue for post-mortem.
